True beauty radiates from within, but nurturing your skin can enhance your natural glow. Personally, I was never the person who would spend a lot on expensive cosmetics. My key skincare routines were mainly based on diet and natural oils such as almond or jojoba oils. Lifestyle is often overlooked when considering healthy skin, yet it is essential. This guide explores a holistic approach to achieving healthy, radiant skin through natural methods and mindful practices.
1. Nourish Your Body from Within
- Water is essential for skin health. Aim for a minimum of eight glasses of water per day to keep your skin hydrated and plump. About 15.5 cups (3.7 litres) of fluids a day for men. About 11.5 cups (2.7 litres) of fluids a day for women.
- A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats provides the essential nutrients and vitamins that your skin needs. Aim for at least five servings of colourful fruits and vegetables daily. An adult portion of fruit or vegetables is 80g. They provide essential vitamins and antioxidants like beta-carotene and vitamin C, which protect the skin from damage and promote cell regeneration.
- Antioxidant Powerhouses: Include plenty of fruits and vegetables like berries, spinach, and carrots, which are packed with antioxidants that protect skin from damage.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Fatty fish, nuts, and seeds are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which help to nourish your skin and reduce inflammation.
- Hydrating Foods: Include hydrating foods like cucumbers, watermelon, and leafy greens in your diet.
- Most popular foods for healthy skin: avocados, blood oranges, bone broth, fatty fish, broccoli, carrots, flaxseeds, green tea, kimchi, kiwis, leafy greens, organ meats, peppers, strawberries, sunflower seeds, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, walnuts, watermelon, yoghurt.

Amongst many skin problems, acne is one of the most common ones. It is often linked to hormonal fluctuations, which can stimulate oil production in the skin, leading to inflammation and breakouts. To minimise acne breakouts, consider these dietary tips:
- Cut back on sugary foods, processed snacks, and saturated and hydrogenated fats, which can contribute to inflammation and skin issues. Minimise your intake of sugary drinks, processed snacks, and unhealthy fats.
- Incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and lean protein into your diet. Include foods rich in vitamins C and E, such as citrus fruits, berries, nuts, and seeds, to protect skin from oxidative damage.
- Consider a Mediterranean diet. This diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and may help improve skin health.

Moreover, psoriasis is a chronic skin condition (red, scaly patches, often appearing on the elbows, knees, and scalp). Several factors can trigger psoriasis flares, including sunburn, alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity, and stress. Dietary modifications can help manage psoriasis symptoms. Minimise saturated fat intake from red and processed meats. Focus on incorporating healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids found in oily fish, nuts, and seeds. Include anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric, ginger, cumin, fennel, and garlic in your diet. However, in some cases, this problem can be triggered by certain foods, so identifying the trigger can be essential in order to solve it. A professional dietician can help supervise these diet changes and exclude foods that can trigger such issues.
3. Establish a Consistent Skincare Routine
- Wash your face daily with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and makeup.
- Apply a moisturiser suitable for your skin type morning and night to lock in moisture.

Coffee Scrub for Naturally Beautiful Skin
Ingredients
- 1 cup finely ground coffee
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp. avocado oil or jojoba oil
- 2 tbsp. coconut oil
Directions
- Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.
- Apply to cleansed skin in gentle circular motions for 1 to 3 minutes — you may want to start on the low end of this range to check how your skin handles the scrub.
- Let the scrub rest for a few minutes, if desired.
- Rinse the scrub clean with lukewarm water.
- Store any leftover mixture in an airtight container.
4. Prioritize Rest and Relaxation
Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. Sleep allows your skin to repair itself and regenerate. If you often work at the office and don’t get to go to the sun a lot, I would recommend looking into red light therapy. Red light therapy (RLT) is a great assistant in treating wrinkles, redness, acne, and scars as well as supporting sleep quality. Chronic stress can negatively impact skin health. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises to manage stress levels.

5. Embrace a Holistic Approach
Excessive alcohol consumption and smoking can dehydrate the skin and accelerate ageing. Similarly, caffeine and soft drinks dehydrate our bodies. Thus, it takes additional hydration and care on such occasions.
Cultivate a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, stress management techniques, and a positive mindset. Physical activity promotes healthy circulation, which further supports healthy and vibrant skin. At the same time, regular exercise helps to reduce stress.
So, as you can see, a healthy lifestyle matters, including diet and sports.
It is all interconnected, and taking care of our bodies is essential for a healthy appearance and feeling.
