Have you ever wondered about sustainability in sports?

The roar of the crowd, the thrill of competition, and the shared joy of victory are the sporting experience’s hallmarks. Yet, pursuing athletic excellence has often come at a cost to the environment. From the carbon footprint of global travel to the ecological impact of large-scale events, the sports industry has faced increasing scrutiny regarding its environmental impact. We always talk about how we can be more sustainable in our lives and what we can do at home. But often, we don’t hear much about what’s being done in the sports industry. Let’s change that!

Early Pioneers and Landmark Moments

The journey towards sustainable sport has been a gradual but steady evolution. Early pioneers, such as the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, set the stage by integrating environmental considerations into the planning and execution of the Games. This landmark event demonstrated that large-scale sporting events could be conducted with a minimal environmental footprint, inspiring subsequent hosts to embrace sustainability as a core value.

The formation of the Green Sports Alliance in 2010 marked a significant turning point. This collective of North American sports teams and venues provided a unified voice for environmental action within the industry, fostering collaboration and driving the adoption of sustainable practices. From renewable energy initiatives to waste reduction programs, the Alliance has played a pivotal role in greening the sports landscape.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and FIFA only began to systematically measure the carbon emissions of their mega-events and develop corresponding policies in the mid-2000s. While a small number of sports federations, such as UEFA, followed suit within the next decade, the vast majority of international and national sports governing bodies have yet to establish robust governance structures or comprehensive policies to address their environmental impacts effectively.

A Global Movement

The momentum for sustainable sport has grown exponentially in recent years. Fueled by increasing public awareness of environmental issues and the growing influence of the global sustainability movement. The Paris Agreement 2015 served as a catalyst, prompting the launch of the Sports for Climate Action Framework, encouraging sports organisations to commit to ambitious climate action goals.

Innovative approaches are emerging across the sporting spectrum, with more and more organisations as well as athletes joining the cause.

Addressing the Challenges

Just imagine all the world’s football clubs and hockey arenas going sustainable.

While significant progress has been made, numerous challenges remain. The high costs associated with implementing sustainable practices can be a significant barrier for many organisations, particularly smaller clubs and teams. Overcoming resistance to change within the sports industry can also be challenging. Not just for organisers but also for us as viewers – the fuel to the sports economy – we often dislike our favourite sports being changed in the name of innovation and sustainability.

Furthermore, developing effective metrics to measure and track progress towards sustainability goals can be complex. But obstacles are there to overcome.

“I think that everything is possible as long as you put your mind to it and you put the work and time into it. I think your mind really controls everything.”

Michael Phelps

Technological solutions and innovations are on the rise. The increasing supply and demand for renewable energy are making it more accessible. Brilliant minds around the world are coming up with new solutions and inspiring the world to change.

Make Change Happen

Our role as fans is not forgotten; in fact, it’s crucial. What choices can we make to make sports more sustainable?

  • Advocate for change by contacting sports organisations (letters, emails, social media) to express the need/support for sustainability initiatives. Support sustainable sponsors, meaning you purchase from brands that prioritise sustainable practices and environmental values.
  • Be conscious when attending events by using sustainable transportation (public transport, cycling, walking), bringing reusable utensils, containers, and water bottles (even without drinks in them, fill them up at the event), or at least utilise recycling options at the venue. Finally, avoid single plastic bags, bottles and other disposable items.
  • Support sustainable initiatives in sports through participation in green events organised by sports teams, and if they don’t have one, suggest them to do so. Support efforts to make sports venues zero-waste. Purchase only eco-friendly merchandise produced with minimal environmental impact.
  • Follow athletes who advocate for environmental sustainability and raise awareness about this topic with your surroundings.
