12. What About Noise Pollution?

Problem: This is often underestimated, but noise pollution can negatively impact human health, wildlife, and ecosystems. In fact, scientists have shown that noise pollution drives many issues, such as hypersensitivity to sound and hearing loss, and it can even exacerbate cardiovascular diseases, sleep disturbances, stress, mental health issues, cognition problems and type 2 diabetes. And that’s not it… researchers are still investigating possible links such as dementia.

Solutions:

  • Use quieter appliances and avoid loud activities during sensitive hours.
  • Support noise reduction initiatives in your community.
  • Consider using noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs when necessary.

13. Chemicals Everywhere

Problem: Chemical pollution can contaminate water sources, harm wildlife, and pose health risks. From household cleaning products to agricultural chemicals, we are constantly exposed to a variety of chemicals that can contaminate our water sources, harm ecosystems, and pose significant health risks.

Pesticides

Solutions:

  • Other sustainable solutions can include supporting businesses and industries that prioritise environmental sustainability, saving ingredients, and properly disposing of potentially harmful chemicals.
  • Many conventional cleaning products contain harmful chemicals that can pollute waterways and indoor air. We recommend looking into what products you buy or make natural cleaning products. Here are some DIY cleaning hacks that are natural and chemical-free.
  • Many personal care products, such as shampoos, soaps, and cosmetics, contain chemicals that can be harmful to both human health and the environment. Use the power of essential oils and natural ingredients
  • Watch what you eat. Consider organic food sources, gardening or joining a community garden. You can look for local food initiatives and farms that don’t use pesticides or herbicides.

14. Be Aware of Overfishing

Problem: Overfishing poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems. It depletes fish populations, disrupts habitats, and harms marine biodiversity. Bycatch, the accidental capture of non-target species, further exacerbates the problem. Overfishing can also lead to food insecurity and economic hardship for coastal communities.

Solutions:

  • Choose sustainable seafood options and reduce your consumption of seafood, especially species that are overfished.
  • Consuming locally caught, seasonal seafood can help support sustainable fishing practices and reduce the environmental impact of transportation.
  • Support initiatives to protect marine habitats and promote sustainable fishing practices.

15. The Flaws of Palm Oil Production

Problem: Palm oil production is a major contributor to deforestation and habitat destruction. Palm oil plantations often replace rainforests, leading to the loss of vital habitats for endangered species. This deforestation also releases significant amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Additionally, the production of palm oil can involve harmful labour practices and contribute to social and environmental injustices.

Solutions:

  • Avoid products containing palm oil.
  • Support companies that use sustainable palm oil alternatives.
  • Be aware of the hidden palm oil sources in products like snacks, cosmetics, and cleaning supplies.
